Meet Dr. Sina Najafi

Dr. Najafi is board-certified in both Internal Medicine and Palliative Care. He attended The University of Texas at Dallas where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology. He completed his medical degree at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth. After completing his residency in Internal Medicine at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, he continued to pursue a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. During this time, he learned how to ease patients’ symptoms (e.g., pain, nausea, vomiting, anxiety, and insomnia) and decrease patients’ suffering. He then returned to Texas where he met his lovely wife Tania and is currently practicing Palliative Care at Baylor Scott & White Health.

While caring for patients who suffer from chronic diseases, Dr. Najafi realized that traditional medical practices would not be sufficient for his patients and started practicing Integrative Medicine, combining modern medicine with complementary health services. He has been able to recommend medical marijuana to his patients since September 2021, after Texas expanded the Compassionate Use Program. Dr. Najafi is excited to recommend legal forms of cannabinoids to qualified Texans in need.

A firm believer in the benefits of medical marijuana, Dr. Najafi remains optimistic that society will continue to make progress on medical cannabis issues, allowing patients who receive relief from medical cannabis to do so without stigma, judgment, and legal jeopardy. Here at Zen Cannabis Clinic, we hope that the lawmakers of Texas further support patients’ rights that allow medical research to be performed in a free and unrestricted way. Yes, medical marijuana (cannabis) is legal for patients with qualified medical conditions under the Texas Compassionate Use Program (TCUP). It is important to remember that marijuana is still illegal on the federal level, meaning that it is illegal to fly or cross state borders with it, even if you are crossing between two of the 37 states that have legalized the medical use of cannabis.

No, Texas does not issue medical marijuana cards. Instead, your information will be entered into the Texas Compassionate Use Registry and can be reviewed by qualified dispensary personnel. Law enforcement staff can also access this registry as needed. If necessary, our office can provide an official letter upon request that verifies your eligibility to use medical cannabis under Texas law.

No, the products sold in CBD shops are derived from hemp and do not contain THC, even though sometimes they are advertised that way. Due to the extraction process, there might be a minimal amount of THC (<0.3%) in these products. However, they will not have any medical benefits. Medical marijuana contains much higher levels of THC. The amount of THC and CBD can be exactly measured. Medical marijuana must uphold higher standards and is more reliable than over-the-counter products. You can learn about the effects of THC and CBD on your body here.

THC and CBD are natural ingredients found in the cannabis plant. These two ingredients have been shown to help treat symptoms associated with certain medical conditions.

THC is found in the marijuana plant and is responsible for psychoactive effects, i.e., a “high feeling”. THC also provides many positive medical benefits, such as decreasing nausea/vomiting and increasing appetite. CBD, when combined with THC, can mediate some of the unwanted side effects of cannabis, such as feeling “high” or anxiety.

Marijuana is still considered a Class I scheduled substance, which means that any sale or possession of marijuana is prohibited under federal law. Some states, like Texas, have legalized the use of medicinal marijuana and allow patients with certain medical conditions to obtain and use medical marijuana without being prosecuted locally.  Medical cannabis is safer than marijuana obtained for reactional use, as it does not have any impurities (such as fentanyl products or other illicit substances that can cause unintentional overdose).

Smoking marijuana, due to its harmful effects on the lungs, has not been approved as a means to consume medical cannabis in Texas. The products are in forms of gummies, lozenges, tinctures, or other formulations to be taken orally. A tincture is a liquid formulation that you can put under your tongue for faster absorption. The oral formulations take about an hour to start taking effect.

After receiving your medical recommendation by Zen Cannabis Clinic, your name will be entered into the Compassionate Use Registry. Then, you can contact your preferred dispensary to obtain your medical cannabis. Some dispensaries provide home delivery options. Unfortunately, insurance companies do not cover the cost of medical marijuana. Zen Cannabis Clinic is unable to process any insurance claims currently, but we can process debit or credit cards.
