Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease (after famous baseball player who died of the disease), is a rare neurological disease that affects motor neurons which leads to voluntary muscle movements. Unfortunately, ALS has not been cured and becomes very debilitating to patients. Preliminary data suggest that cannabinoids may have modest effects on spasticity and pain although further studies are needed to validate this. Here at Zen Cannabis Clinic, we will work with you to find the right dose of medical cannabis.

Medical Marijuana Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: What is it?

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis “ALS” is a disease that damages the nerves that control muscles, causing muscles to get weaker. The muscles may slowly stop working, leaving the person unable to move called, “paralysis”. Sadly, over time, the disease gets worse and leads to death. ALS is also known as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease”, after the famous baseball player who died of the disease. There is no cure for ALS, but doctors can treat the symptoms and prescribe medicines that might slow down the disease a little bit. Medical marijuana, in addition to other medications, can help with spasticity and pain.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: What are the causes?

In most cases, there is no known cause for ALS. In about 10 percent of the cases, the disease is caused by a genetic problem.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: What are the symptoms?

Weak leg or arm muscle (starting in 1 extremity and then spreading to other parts), trouble speaking or swallowing, walking, balance issues, and muscle spasms.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: How is it treated?

Treatments for ALS include these medicines:
  • Riluzole (brand names: Rilutek, Exservan, Tiglutik)
  • Edaravone (brand name: Radicava)
  • “PB-TURSO” (brand names: Relyvrio, Albrioza)
These medicines work by slowing down the progress of the disease a little bit. They might help people live a few months longer. All other treatments are aimed at symptom management: this includes oxygen, feeding tube, cane, wheelchair, medications to alleviate pain, depression, anxiety and spasticity. Medical Marijuana can help symptoms of spasticity. It can also be taken for relieving anxiety and improving quality of sleep.
